#WisdomWednesdays: Reducing Your Cognitive Load and Creating Ripples of Kindness

wisdomwednesdays-reducing-your-cognitive-load-and-creating-ripples-of-kindness

In a society that gives so much value to material possessions, we tend to get lost in all the clutter. Presented with many options every day, we stress out even on simple things like what to eat or what to wear. We unknowingly get bogged down by these choices, trapped in the mindset that more is better.

In this episode, Rosie and Tessa talk about ways to lighten your cognitive load. They discuss why having a simple routine can help us allocate our energy to the things that truly matter.

They also touch on the ripple effects of kindness. If we uplift one person, they will then pass on the positivity to those around them. Furthermore, Rosie and Tessa tackle the importance of being kind to yourself and how this affects our attitude toward other people.

Do you think you’re spending too much time and energy on making decisions? Do you want to live your life being kind to everyone and yourself? If you answered yes to these questions, then this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn how to lighten your cognitive load.

  2. Understand the far-reaching effects of being kind to everyone.

  3. Discover ways to be more kind to yourself.

    Episode Highlights

    What Is Cognitive Load?

    • The things we carry increase our cognitive load.

    • What to wear and what to eat—these decisions exhaust our mental energy.

    • It’s overwhelming for us to have so many choices. Instead of making our lives easier, choices make them more difficult.

[06:19] “We think that having so much choice is better. But in fact, it's actually a lot more difficult.”

    • We make decisions all day long, but not all of them are equally important.

    The Importance of Routine

    • Having a strict, simple routine allows writers and artists to preserve their energy for creativity.

    • Needing to make many small decisions during the day pulls us away from the work we need to focus on.

    • When you want to create something, plan ahead so you can dedicate most of your time and energy to it.

    • Once you develop a habit, you expend less energetic output towards doing that task.

[11:30] “We are such creatures of habit, and there's comfort in that.”

    • Find the balance between variety and routine.

    Being Kind to Everyone

    • Light Watkins’ book tells the story of a child who was on the brink of starvation.

    • A Nazi soldier snuck him a rotten potato. The child credits this act of kindness as the thing that helped him survive the holocaust.

    • The child passed this story on to his son and instilled in him the importance of being kind to everyone.

    • To immortalize his father’s lesson on the importance of being kind to everyone, the son created the KIND Bar.

[19:38] So the wisdom, for me, that was inspiring was the whole idea of kindness and how all it takes is just one gesture.

    The Ripple Effects of Kindness

    • Listen to the full episode to hear about Tessa and Rosie’s incredible stories of a ripple effect that started with one kind gesture.

    • Kindness is about allowing the ripple effect to begin.

[21:19] “Just the smallest kindness can change the course of somebody's day, somebody's life.”

    • Make it a goal to do one random act of kindness every day.

    Being Kind to Ourselves

    • Being kind to everyone starts with how kind we are with ourselves.

    • Start building a relationship with yourself by taking yourself out on a date.

    • You can do this by having a long scenic drive, going out to dinner with a book, or planning a solitary retreat.

    • Cultivating a relationship with yourself may help diminish your feeling that something is lacking.

[25:01] “One of the reasons we depend on others for entertainment is because we don’t trust ourselves to provide it or maybe we just haven’t practiced it yet.”

    • When you enjoy being by yourself, you won’t need to seek as much validation from others.
