Episode Highlights
[02:14] Robyn’s Spiritual Journey
Robyn was in media, running several organizations and speaking at empowerment conferences. She did this for 20 years.
She hit her rock bottom moment when she realized she need to take a break from everything. She was overperforming and overworked.
Robyn realized she was missing so many of her family moments for the sake of work.
“I totally hit a wall. And so when I hit that wall and had sort of what I guess was like, maybe my rock bottom moment, that's when I had a real big epiphany and realized that I needed a break." - Click Here to Tweet This
Being at work drained her, and she found the name of her problem: a Spanish word, susto that means, “to scare”. She felt her soul was lost.
Robyn discovered curanderismo, a traditional Mexican-American method of healing.
[17:49] The Significance of Calendars
Our 365-day calendar is a solar calendar.
The Mexica used a 260 day calendar for divination. Today, it’s called a tōnalpōhualli.
Depending on your birthday on this calendar, it may signify certain things, such as your characteristics. It’s a complex study.
Robyn believes that the number 260 plays a significant role in human growth.
“I really feel very much, honestly, that I think ancestors or spirit, something, was saying that you do this, do this. I don't know where it's going to end up, but we're calling you to do this. And so I answered the call.” - Click Here to Tweet This
[23:56] Healing is a Journey
Robyn used the 260-day concept as a way to organize a healing spiritual journey, especially for women.
There was a plan, but no plan survives forever. The important thing is to keep walking on your healing journey.
"I found out pretty quickly that that just all fell apart and that healing is a journey and not a destination." - Click Here to Tweet This
A central part of curanderismo is a connection to nature. Nature is a guide to healing.
Direction plays a significant role in a spiritual journey. In Robyn’s case, that meant the cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West. They each have symbolism.

[33:04] Robyn Moreno on Writing Get Rooted
“Get Rooted” was Robyn’s way of honoring her healing and spiritual journey.
She only began to write when she could let go of her identity.
Everyone goes on a journey; Robyn encourages everyone to tell their story, especially women of color.
[37:23] The Hummingbird
The hummingbird plays a major role in a creation story from Robyn’s ancestors.
To Robyn, the hummingbird is a symbol of healing. The hummingbird would lead her home.
"And so what I ask for, people, is to quiet down and to listen, because we can guide ourselves home... maybe it's just one step at a time, but we'll get there.” - Click Here to Tweet This
Our spiritual journey starts with listening to the hummingbird of your heart.
[41:12] How Robyn Feels Radically Loved
Robyn’s spiritual journey starts with sadness, hurt, and seeking.
She began searching for her soul, but she found her soul and lineage.
“What I found was love. It's really love that I found, which makes me cry, but it's I found love in my lineage and all the people that came for me that worked so hard and that survived so much, where I was their wildest dream, right?" - Click Here to Tweet This
To Robyn, love is looking at her children, but also looking backwards at her ancestry.
