[05:06] Why Amino Acids are Important
Few endurance athletes and cardio enthusiasts realize how vital amino acids are to their performance.
About 55 to 60% of your body is water. The rest consists of amino acids in the form of proteins.
Proteins are the building blocks of life, making up the muscles, organs, and neurotransmitters.
[06:13] Angelo: “The reason why protein is so important is because of the amino acids. If you do not eat amino acids, then you can't have things like organs and muscle and enzymes throughout your whole body and neurotransmitters function.” - Click Here to Tweet This
[06:32] Essential Amino Acids
Essential amino acids are the active component of protein, which stimulate muscle protein synthesis.
There are nine essential amino acids primarily found in animal protein.
Consuming the proper serving size of animal protein stimulates muscle protein synthesis. Listen to the full episode to learn more about how this works!
Muscle breakdown begins after a few hours without consuming essential amino acids.
Running and cardio stimulate more muscle protein breakdown.
[07:58] Angelo: “Anytime that you go a few hours without consuming essential amino acids, either as a dietary supplement or in the form of a really good protein, you start breaking down muscle. You will actually start having a net muscle loss.” - Click Here to Tweet This
[08:30] On Dietary Supplements
Essential amino acids in dietary supplement form have at least a two to threefold greater impact on healthy adults.
The effect is more substantial for less healthy individuals.
[10:05] For Vegetarians and Vegans
Angelo grew up pescatarian. His parents were into alternative natural health.
Due to their diets' nutrient density and profile, vegetarians and vegans have to work hard to get enough amino acids
Their diets have a low amount of protein relative to other macronutrients.
Only a few plant foods contain nine essential amino acids, including quinoa, buckwheat, and soy.
You must have an intake of all nine essential amino acids, or you'll end up with net muscle loss.
[11:55] Angelo: “You must eat all nine essential amino acids to have this thing we're talking about—muscle protein synthesis. If you only have six, your body will try to pull the other amino acids out of your existing tissue, out of your muscle, so you end up like having a net loss.” - Click Here to Tweet This
[15:28] Utilizing Supplements
Kion Aminos are ideal for supplementing vegan diets because they are plant-based. It is best taken two to three times per day.
Supplements are not meant to replace your diet.

[19:17] Recommended Dietary Allowances
The RDA protein requirements are the absolute minimum needed.
The body's ability to stimulate muscle protein synthesis degrades as you hit age 40.
0.7 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight is best for maintenance. Meanwhile, 1 gram of protein is ideal for weight loss or training.
Amino acid supplements aid endurance athletes in maintaining muscle and getting an additional fuel source.
[24:13] Choosing a Supplement Brand
Check the brand’s label. There shouldn’t be a load of jargon.
Consider how the brand markets itself and its product.
Talk to people you trust for recommendations.
Ineffective supplement brands are cheaper because they cut corners.
[25:50] Angelo: “This is something you're consuming [and] putting inside your body. You don't want them cutting corners on that, and that's really the only way brands get cheaper is—by cutting corners.” - Click Here to Tweet This
