Understanding the Universality of Grief with Jasmin Jenkins
Grief is painful. So we tend to dismiss and push it down our hearts. We block any thoughts of it in our minds rather than face it head-on and get hurt in the process. While this can work in the short term, it can be highly detrimental in the long term. At some point, we have to unburden ourselves to heal.
In this episode, Jasmin Jenkins joins us to discuss loss and how we can navigate it in the new normal. She also outlines why mourning is universal and what the different modalities of healing are. Finally, Jasmin lets us in on her framework, The Four Invitations of Grief.
If you’re working on healing through grief, this episode with Jasmin Jenkins will provide valuable insights to help you along your journey.

Episode Highlights
National Grief Awareness Day
Angie Cartwright spearheaded August 30 as the National Grief Awareness Day. It is the anniversary of her mom's passing.
This day honors her loss and invites all of us to be aware of ours.
It’s a commentary on where we need to keep growing in terms of our conversation about it.
It is part of the human journey.
Grief in the New Normal
We’ve always had grief. The situation of the world this year has only amplified that reality.
With the racial uprising that’s happening, it has come to the forefront.
It’s about figuring out how to meet this conversation with grace.
Jasmin’s Grief is Universal campaign brings everyone into the truth that it is a universal human experience.
An Invitation for Transformation
There is so much resistance around grief in the same way that suffering is resistance to pain.
It is an invitation for us to open up to the impermanence of life and the beauty of living.
The Grief Spectrum
A lot of people associate grief with death but not with life transitions.
We consider it as a taboo subject.
The more in flow you can be in a conversation of grief, the more in flow you can be with life.
At the most fundamental level, it arises from an unmet expectation. It has different textures and layers.
The center of the issue is the heart.
Grief Timeline
There’s no timeline for grief. It requires an endless amount of grace with ourselves and with others.
It’s not something we can rush through.
We have to let it in. If we keep it outside our being, we're also keeping out key lessons, wisdom, and insights.
The more you go into your feelings, the more you will engage with healing.
Everyone’s loss is as unique as their fingerprint.
Different Modalities of Healing
Jasmin's initiation points were losing her mom to cancer at 15 and her brother to suicide at 25.
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy is a powerful trauma healing modality that got her out of the place Jasmin was stuck in.
Talk therapy can also be valuable, although it can be a bit regressive.
The most transformational modality for Jasmin has been plant medicine.
Therapy and traditional guidance work help tackle this multi-layered emotional experience.
Healing Through Plant Medicine
Grandmother medicine was Jasmin’s first attempt at plant medicine. Jasmin has also tried kanna, a South African plant medicine.
Plant medicines can be psychoactive or non-psychoactive.
When you're working with plant medicine and flower essences, you're receiving the flowers' vibrational imprint.
The ritual of tea can be a catalyst for internal check-in and a powerful way to love ourselves.
Shared Grief Is Shared Courage
The etymology of grief traces back to burden. Meanwhile, courage traces back to the heart.
By unburdening ourselves with our voices, we are putting our stories into the collective.
Grief work is the work of the courageous hearts.
We have to challenge ourselves not to compare our losses. Instead, we have to realize that ours is medicine for the collective.
The Most Important Thing About Grief
It’s a complex, multi-layered experience that requires gentleness.
Everybody’s grieving; practicing the blessing of others is practicing the blessing of our own stories.
A Safe Place for Grief
Feeling through its layer allows us to return to our hearts.
The four invitations of grief are pause, breathe, feel, and heal.
You have to acknowledge that healing is a process. It takes us back to trusting life.
